In a surprisingly short bout, heavyweight Alonzo Butler (26-0-1) knocked out war-horse Ralph West (17-12-1) at 2:19 of the first round. The surprise was not in the quickness of the KO but in the ability shown by Butler. In that brief time he showed tremendous improvement over previous bouts, no plodding, no lingering punches, no trepidation, just good, clean, quick, and devastating punches.
Especially impressive was his defense. Butler picked off almost every blow West threw and did it with class and fineness using small movements with his gloves, a flick here, a push there, and usually followed by a counter punch of is own. When West hit the canvass he had no inclination to rise and Butler, sporting that contagious grin of his, raised his hands in triumph.

Ricky Hatton says he will dedicate his forthcoming defence of the International Boxing Organisation world light-welterweight title, against Mexico's José Luis Castillo, to the memory of Diego Corrales, who has been killed in a motorbike accident close to his home in Las Vegas.
Corrales, 29, was best known for his three fights against the Cuban-born Joel Casamayor, one of which he won to take the WBO super-featherweight title, and two with Castillo, the first of which he won to claim the WBC and WBO lightweight titles. He had been mentioned as a potential opponent for Hatton.

The return to the ring of Acelino Freitas (38-1-0) against undefeated Juan Diaz (31-0-0) at Foxwoods Resort Casino on April 28th has all the makings of a classic slugfest. In a world of decent but boring fighters -Floyd Meyweather comes to mind - these two boxers actually fight. With 32 knockouts Freitas has no problem sending opponents to the mat.
Freitas started his knockout career putting away his first 29 opponents. At the age of 31, his experience exceeds that of 23 year old Diaz. Then undefeated Joel Casamayor felt his power when he tumbled in the third round of a title fight and lost a unanimous decision 114-112 on all judges cards.
