The people's man tells our The Times correspondent Owen Slot about his special relationship with his fans, 2,000 of whom will be with him in Las Vegas
The image of the lone athlete out training on Christmas Day is not a new one. Daley Thompson patented it, countless have since copied it and here is the latest, hard at work four days ago on the east side of Manchester: Ricky Hatton, celebrating Christmas in the gym in preparation for his forthcoming bout next month. As he put it himself: “The plan was to see my son open his Christmas presents and then come down to the gym and get my head punched in.”

DURAN FAN HITMAN WORTH WEIGHT IN GOLD American legend's a huge fan of Ricky
SUGAR RAY LEONARD is a huge fan of Ricky Hatton ... but the American ring legend is concerned the British hero could become too HUGE.
The Hitman, whose next world title challenge comes January 20th, 2007, even pokes fun at himself for piling on the pounds in between bouts.
And Leonard saw the funny side when he thought a picture of the boxer was actually roly-poly veteran comedian Bernard Manning.
The five-time world champion - who still looks a million dollars despite turning 50 last May - said of Hatton: "I know he blows up between fights.

Today the WBC sent representatives to weigh both Jose Luis Castillo and Herman N'Goudjo at their respective camps. Castillo's numbers are of particular interest as he recently failed spectacularly in making the weight limit for two scheduled WBC lightweight title fights against Diego Corrales. Jose Herrera Ornelas weighed Castillo in Toluca, Mexico and his weight is 154 lbs. Jack Woodburn weighed N'Goudjo in Canada and his weight is 153.5 lbs. Castillo and N'Goudjo collide on January 20 in Las Vegas in a WBC super lightweight (140lb) eliminator. At the 30 day weigh-in, a fighter cannot weigh over 10% of his contract weight, so both fighters are right about at the limit. At the seven day weigh-in, a fighter must be within 5% of his or her contract weight. |

"I grew up in the era of Leonard, Hearns and Hagler, and seeing them fight in Vegas got me into boxing. The fact I am fighting in the same city, and topping the bill in a world title fight with my name up in lights on the Las Vegas strip is the stuff that dreams are made of. I am living the dream, and I don't want it to stop."

IBF Featherweight Champion Robert Guerrero and challenger Orlando Salido didn't live up to the high expectations of this fight being thriller.
But on this night, Guerrero, from Gilroy, CA, looked more like an unpolished prospect than a world champion ready to dominate his weight class. As it turned out, it was Salido, the journeyman with a modest record, who had his hands raised in triumph as he scored an upset over the once-beaten Guerrero and lifted his world title.

South Africa’s Malcolm Klassen won the IBF junior lightweight title when he beat Gairy St Clair on a split decision in Kempton Park near Johannesburg on Saturday night. Klassen produced a stunning performance to win 118-112 and 117-111 on two cards. The other judge, an Australian, gave it to St Clair, 115-113.
The new champion, given almost no chance by most experts, outgunned the Guyana-born Australian in almost every department.
