Upon hearing the news that Joe Greene could be pulling out of his scheduled bout with WBC interim champion Sergio Martinez, junior middleweight contender Ishe "Sugar Shay" Smith contacted Boxingtalk.com and stated, "I just read the news on B-talk and I want the fight. We were talking a lot about Kirkland last time, but Martinez is definitely somebody I've been wanting to fight and I promise all of my fans when I get my next shot on HBO, I will not disappoint. Hopefully Lou DiBella and the people at HBO are reading this, and decide to give me the opportunity. I can make the weight, I'm in shape and I'm ready to become WBC interim champion."

Barrett had this to say, "My advisor and his manager have already spoken and everybody likes the fight. You know I don't turn no fights like this down and if Samuel is man enough to sign on the dotted line, I'll be there to put him flat on his behind. I had an off night against David Haye and there's no better way to prove it than wiping Samuel clean out of the heavyweight picture."

Leon's Response: Some weigh ins are open to the public and others are not. It depends. You didn't buy your ticket for the undercard fights, you bought it for the main event, so maybe you shouldn't be too peeved. I'm sure the undercard will feature a plethora of young talent against overmatched opponents. You'll get a Danny Jacobs KO1, a Danny Garcia KO2 or a couple of those kind or results.

We had Mayweather retire last year (everyone knew it wasn't for real) but this year we have Joe Calzaghe, Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones, Evander Holyfield, Vernon Forrest, Verno Phillips, Oscar De La Hoya, and Shane Mosley all retiring possibly this year. Can you remember a time when boxing had so many stars retiring the same year? Is there anybody in their 20's that can accept the torch and help the mainstream fan get excited?Sean Rhode Island
Leon's Response: I expect this to be Oscar and Bernard's and last year. Not so sure about Shane or anyone else on your list, so to answer your question, no I don't think boxing is in trouble in 09.

Five Fighters to Makes Moves Big in 2009

As we start 2009 lets take a look at 5 names that you will see rise in 2009. There are many more hot prospects but I picked 5 that have a good shot at becoming big names in 2009. I used the age of thirty for the heavyweights since they tend to take more time to develop and for the otherweights I used twenty seven as the maximum age. I chose fighters without major belts except for Juan Manuel Lopez who has been flying under the radar even with his WBO Super Bantamweight belt due to lack of fighting quality opposition except Ponce De Leon. Because of this I left out names like Chad Dawson as I feel he beat a couple of quality opponents in 2008 and that was his breakout year.
