Freitas making champs in Brazil! PDF Print E-mail

WBO lightweight champion Acelino Freitas has been keeping himself busy these days in Brazil investing in his career as a boxing promoter. His last show took place a few hours ago, in his hometown of Salvador, Brazil, where two of the fighters currently on his stable won WBO/Latino belts on the same card.

In the light-flyweight division, Edílson Lima had a very tough slugfest against Raul Eliseo Medina from Argentina. The Brazilian had the edge in the early round, while Medina came up strong later on. The fight was disputed toe-to-toe during most of it. In the end, Lima got the unanimous decision by scores of 115-113, 116-112 and 118-111. This observer had 116-112 Lima.

In the main-event, highly-touted Brazilian 122 pounder Carlos "Hurricane" Oliveira (20-0, 15 KOs) got his third consecutive points win and the interim WBO/Latino belt with an unanimous decision over another Argentinean, Pablo Sepulveda (12-4, 5 KOs). This one was a foul-filled match, with Oliveira being deducted two points and Medina one. Oliveira, however, landed the cleaner blows and did enough to get the win with scores of 118-107, 117-108 and 118-112. This observer had 116-109 Oliveira.

Both Lima and Oliveira are expected to be rated in the Top 12 of the WBO in the next rankings.

Watching closely from ringside, the WBO lightweight champ Acelino Freitas rooted and screamed for his clients, seemed in good spirits and a few pounds above his fighting weight.

In the last few weeks, Freitas himself and some advisers are trying to negotiate a rematch and unification match against WBC 135 pound champ Joel Casamayor, whom was defeated by him in January 2002. There are a few rumors that this bout could take place in Brazil. However, no signed deal has been announced up to now.
