“ I am very excited about this fight. This is my second time going for a title shot, and this time, I am hungrier than ever.” Rodney Jones
Light middleweight contender "Smooth" Rodney Jones has been waiting for a long time to get his second title shot. It was September of 2000 when Jones came up short against then - WBO champ Harry Simon, losing a majority decision.
In recent years, he feels as if he had been overlooked. Most recently he thought he would get a shot at then world champion Roman Karmazin, but Karmazin opted to fight Cory Spinks instead.
In spite of it all, Jones remained patient and will finally get his shot when he faces IBF Light Middleweight Champion Cory Spinks at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida, on the undercard of the Showtime televised Adamek vs Dawson and Diaz vs Chavez double feature, this Saturday, February 3.
“I am very excited about this fight,” admitted Jones. “This is my second time going for a title shot, and this time I am hungrier than ever.”
Jones attributes the loss to Simon on not having his usual trainer, “When I fought Harry Simon, I didn't have my normal trainer, Richard Perez. My trainer (Perez) had a major influence on me, and my career. Back in 2000, the manager that I was working with wanted to bring in a different trainer, even though Perez and I had been working together for 18 years.”
Cory Spinks will be a big test for Rodney Jones, however Spinks isn't the first marquee name on his resume. Back in June of 1996 he beat a very good up and coming Mexican fighter by the name of Antonio Margarito. Jones fought to a 10-round unanimous decision, a win that, to this day, he is very proud of. “Oh man, that was a great win for me. It was my first time going 10 rounds with such a seasoned fighter like that. I just stuck to my game-plan, and beat him every round. I was trying to go for the knockout, but he had a very good chin.”
A victory over Cory Spinks will change a lot of things for Jones. Would a possible rematch be in the works for an Antonio Margarito fight? “Well you know, anything is possible. I would have to see if the boxing public would be interested in that fight. If that is a fight that the public wanted, then I would be more than happy to make that fight, if I could.”
Jones is just happy to be finally getting a crack at the title, it's been a long road for him. He's not a guy that makes a lot of noise, and he's not a guy that prances around talking a lot of garbage either, he just shows up at the gym, and he works. All of the hours in the gym has finally paid off for him, “The fight isn't scheduled to be televised, and that's unfortunate. The fans are going to miss out on a great fight. The main thing is, I finally got the fight and we will take care of business. Look out for Rodney Jones in the future.
