Professional Career
At the age of 25, Ruslan is a two-year pro. An exciting prospect at 140 pounds, he has stayed active in the ring and made good progress. He is coming off a six round unanimous decision win against Esteban Almarez in his last fight in March, 2009. Ruslan gave an impressive performance, and got rave reviews. After the fight, Doug Fischer reported on The Ring blog [excerpts]: Siberian amateur standout Ruslan Prodnikov had the look of a future titleholder while brutally out-pointing Esteban Almaraz over six rounds. Prodnikov employed smart pressure, hard and accurate punches and a precise and persistent body attack.... [End Fischer item] Boxingscene.com’s Cliff Rold wrote [excerpts]: Without much fanfare coming in, the star of the night may well have been 25-year old Russian jr. welterweight Ruslan Provodnikov.... [End Rold item] Dan Rafael wrote on ESPN.com: Promoter Artie Pelullo may have found himself a hidden gem in Provodnikov. The 25-year-old Russian (from Siberia) looks like he has a lot of promise and he certainly has a crowd-pleasing style. Fighting in the U.S. for the sixth time - he trained in Los Angeles for this fight - as he splits time between here and Russia, Provodnikov, who had a strong amateur background, fought extremely well. Almaraz, 28, was no pushover opponent either, but Provodnikov dropped him in the fifth with a right hand to the body and won the clear decision. If you were reminded of Kostya Tszyu (minus the ponytail) watching him fight, you weren't the only one. [End Rafael item] Ruslan said through an interpreter, “My style is a lot of pressure, always going forward, sudden, hard punches. I like to control the fight the whole way. “Coming from the amateurs to the pros was much better for me - I like the pro style much more. I always had more power than anybody as an amateur. Other amateurs didn’t like to spar with me because of my style – too much power. “Since I turned pro, I’ve become more serious in preparing for my fights.” Fight by Fight – 2009 - in his last fight on 3-20-09 in Laredo, TX, he won a 6 round unanimous decision against Esteban Almarez (9-1): Almarez gave a good effort, but Ruslan dominated the fight; he pressed forward, wore down Almarez with hard body punches, and consistently outworked him; Almarez was cut over his right eye in the 3rd round, and Ruslan scored a knockdown with a series of punches in the 5th round; scored 60-53, 60-54, 59-55... On 2-21-09 in Khanty-Mansi, RUS, he won a 6 round unanimous decision against previously undefeated Abdulaziz Matazimov (7-0): Ruslan scored one knockdown in the 1st round and another in the 3rd... 2008 - on 11-3-08 in Berozovo, RUS, he won a 10 round unanimous decision against Sergey Starkov (16-48-2): Ruslan dominated the fight and shut out Starkov on the scorecards – scored 100-90 on all three scorecards... Provodnikov has a solid base, quick hands and good upper body movement.”... On 3-7-08 in Mashantucket, CT, he TKO’d Jose Roman (10-21-5): the fight was on the undercard of the Cristobal Cruz-Thomas Mashaba main event at Foxwoods; Ruslan scored two knockdowns in the 1st round – both with series of right hands; Roman got up both times, but Ruslan rocked him again and the referee stopped the fight at 2:28... “I started boxing when I was 10 years old. I liked to fight when I was young, so my father took me to a boxing gym. I had a little over 150 amateur fights. I had around 130 wins and 20 losses. “Berezovo is like an island and it’s really cold there. On one side is deep forest and on the other is a river. In spring and autumn it’s really hard to get out of there because the snow melts and there’s water everywhere. The only way to get out is to fly, and there’s not a lot of planes that fly there. It’s complicated. “It is very, very far away from other parts of Russia, so I couldn’t participate in a lot of the biggest amateur tournaments. There are no big amateur tournaments in Berezovo. “I was the 2000 junior champion of Russia, and I was the winner at the Junior Championships of Europe in Greece in 2000. I was also part of the championships between oil countries three times, but I didn’t win those tournaments. “I received the “Master of Boxing” in Russia. [note: literally translated – Master of Sport] In Russia, it’s a big thing - not a lot of people in Russia get it. The Russian Sport Commission gave it to me in 2003. It’s a lifetime award. “I’m married and have a five month-old son. His name is Ivan. I don’t get to see my family a lot because I travel so much. I really miss them.” Ruslan is also a fifth-year student of physical culture and sports at the Nijnevartovsky State Humanitarian University and plans to graduate in June, 2009. AMATEUR HIGHLIGHTS: 2005 OIL PRODUCING COUNTRIES CUP, Nizhnevartovsk, Russia, 151 pounds: in the quarterfinals on 12-1-05 he lost a 35-21 decision against Artur Khachatrian of Armenia... 2000 EUROPEAN CADET (JUNIOR) CHAMPIONSHIPS, Patra, Greece, 105 pounds – GOLD MEDALIST: in the finals he beat Denis Litwinienko of Ukraine... STRENGTHS: Has an aggressive style and good punching power...a good body puncher...physically strong, tough and determined...had a strong amateur background... PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: 12 fights...44 total rounds...
