Professional Career
Rodney started boxing as a pro in 1991. A veteran lefthanded contender at 154 pounds, he is undefeated - 12-0-1 - in his last 13 fights, with nine wins by knockout, dating back to July, 2001.
Rodney said, “I’m looking to fight for a world title, and in order to do that, I’ve got to show that I’m the best fighter in the world. One of my tests is to go through people to prove that I’m an all-around fighter, I’m not just one-dimensional. In order to be successful in the fight game, you have to be able to fight against all kinds of styles.”
He has fought good opposition throughout his career and has several impressive wins to his credit, including Michael Lerma (W12), Dwain Williams (KO5), Fidel Avendano (W10), Shibata Flores (KO11), and Antonio Margarito (W10), who currently holds the WBO welterweight world title.
Rodney's third loss was his first world title challenge September 23, 2000, by 12-round majority decision against WBO jr. middleweight champion Harry Simon. Rodney's first and second loss came in his sixth and seventh pro fights in 1993 against Ross Thompson and Alfred Ankamah.
Rodney's second world title challenge resulted in the forth loss of his career. He challenged 4 time world champion Cory Spinks for his IBF jr. middleweight title on February 3, 2007, dropping a unanimous decision over 12 rounds.
Regarding his nickname, he said, “You know my trainer, we were just joking around and listening to music and it had something smooth in it or whatever. We just started playing with it, and then went with it. It was around ’94, I think.”
